Herat, which today is a part of Afghanistan but in the mid 19th century was the capital of the Khorasan, gave its name to rugs of the typically Persian style decorated with designs which became known as herati. This type of design has become widespread as far away as the region of Sultanabat. Mashhad has remained an Iranian town without western influence and is famous in Iran for the excellence of its rugs.
